Our detailed dictionary of internet terms

A set of letters and symbols in a particular design and size.

These fonts belong to families which share certain traits and characteristics. These font families rely on the first listed font for display, falling back onto the other fonts in family, in order, until one is found that is supported by the Browser or operating system.

Below is a list of some of the most common font families in use on the web today.

  • Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif
  • Georgia, Times New Roman, Times, serif
  • Courier New, Courier, monospace
  • Geneva

Any font can be used on a website, but that font is required to be installed on the viewers computer for it to display as intended, otherwise the browser will fall back to a standard font.

At Toucan Web Design we only use standard font families to maximise Accessibility and minimize display issues.
